CULT MOVIE:COOL HAND LUKE(1967)

Rosenberg's classic anti-hero prison drama, with Newman (second choice after Telly Savalas refused to fly back from Europe) as the irrepressible, non-conformist Luke.Released at a time when any sign of rebellion against the establishment was revered, audiences lapped up classic scenes such as the opening destruction of parking meters (particularly popular today no doubt), but Newman's egg-eating feat remains the pinnacle of his cool. The only downer is Rosenberg's use of religious symbolism, with Newman as a Christ figure.Look out for early perfomances by Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton.
