The funniest thing about this much-analyzed film is that so many of the actors ended up in Last Of the Summer Wine, May To December and, well, Coronation Street, where actor John Savident has achieved lasting fame as butcher Fred Elliott. Kubrick himself withdrew the film after all the stories that real criminals had felt inspired to copy the crimes commited by McDowell and his gang-- which seems doubly ironic when one of the messages of this savage satire is that you can't escape the law of karma. Kubrick does change the emphasis of Burgess' novel, often in ways that seem misogynistic, and was accused of creating "intellectual pornography". The furore is, in part, a tribute to the film's disturbing power.
